Liverpool are getting a FREE shot at a 2-cap England international — and it only costs them the £41.2MILLION they’re about to WIPE OFF THE BOOKS!Posted on September 29, 2026 – 8:09 am by Mai Huỳnh×Liverpool’s full-back department is quietly becoming one of the more intriguing subplots of the Julian Ward era.
The new sporting director inherits a squad that still needs surgical work rather than the free-spending days of his predecessor, and the left side of defence is firmly on the priority list.Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell is emerging as the smart, low-risk solution. The 27-year-old England international (two senior caps) is out of contract at the end of the season. Palace are desperate to open talks on a new deal, but interest from elsewhere is already heating up.
Manchester United have been linked with a January move, and Liverpool are now firmly in the conversation too.David Lynch put it bluntly on Anfield Index: “Someone like Mitchell as a left-back on a free transfer; he’s homegrown as well. That would be a pretty smart signing. I think there’s a good chance he’d be coming and be really good competition at left-back for Liverpool.
I think he’s quite a good player and, as I say, he ticks the homegrown box as well.”That last point matters. Homegrown status helps with Premier League and European squad registration rules, and Mitchell arrives with more than 200 Premier League appearances under his belt. He would not need time to adapt to the intensity or physicality of English football. The timing is convenient. Milos Kerkez, the £40m arrival from 2025, has yet to justify the fee in the eyes of many observers.
He remains first-choice under Andoni Iraola for now, but questions about consistency linger. Behind him sits Kostas Tsimikas, who is no longer in favour and is widely expected to leave next summer. On the opposite flank, Jeremie Frimpong’s Anfield experiment looks increasingly like one that did not work. Signed for £29.5m from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, the Dutchman has struggled to establish himself as more than a rotational option.
Lynch’s assessment was characteristically direct: he would be surprised if Liverpool do not cut their losses at the end of the season and move the player on.Add Tsimikas’s original £11.75m fee from Olympiacos and the combined book value of the two players heading towards the exit sits at roughly £41.2m. Clearing those wages and amortisation charges would free up both budget and squad space. In that context, Mitchell does not simply look like a free transfer.
He looks like a free transfer funded by the tidy-up of previous business.Liverpool could move for him in January for a modest fee while his contract still has six months to run, or wait until the summer and take him on a free. Either route carries risk. Competition will be fierce, and Mitchell may receive offers that guarantee him a starting role elsewhere. Lynch acknowledged as much: “It kind of depends on what the competition is around him and how high the contract offers start to go. He could be offered to be a starter somewhere maybe. So, you know, maybe that makes it harder.” Still, he concluded, “He’d be a sensible one for me.”
Ward is expected to operate with more restraint than the previous regime, which smashed through the £100m barrier multiple times. In that environment, a proven Premier League left-back who costs little or nothing up front, qualifies as homegrown, and arrives just as two underwhelming full-backs are shown the door feels like classic Ward business.Whether Liverpool move early or wait until next summer, the opportunity is clear. They can strengthen a problem position, improve their squad-registration position, and do so while wiping a significant sum off the books. For a club recalibrating under new leadership, that is about as close to a free hit as modern football allows. This entry was posted in Liverpool .
