Liverpool are reportedly in no hurry to open contract negotiations with Alexis Mac Allister, despite the midfielder’s outstanding performances and growing importance to the team.

The Argentina international has entered the final two years of his current deal at Anfield, with his contract running until the summer of 2028. However, according to a report by The Telegraph, Liverpool’s hierarchy are not planning to rush into discussions over an extension.

The situation has attracted attention after Mac Allister expressed disappointment in September over not receiving a new contract during the summer, particularly as fellow 2023 arrivals Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch had secured extensions.

Mac Allister Rediscovers His Best Form

Mac Allister struggled for consistency during the 2025/26 campaign, but he has responded impressively at the start of the new season.

The 27-year-old has re-established himself as a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield, combining intelligent passing, composure in possession and an ability to contribute crucial goals.

His performance against Villarreal on Tuesday night further underlined his importance. Mac Allister scored twice as Liverpool recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory.

The midfielder is already just one goal short of his entire scoring total from last season, highlighting the improvement in his attacking contribution.

According to The Telegraph’s Dominic King, Mac Allister has become a driving force behind Liverpool’s recent performances. The journalist described him as a crucial component of the midfield and suggested the club could reconsider its position if the player maintains his current level.

Why Are Liverpool Taking Their Time?

Liverpool’s reluctance to accelerate negotiations may partly reflect their approach to offering long-term contracts to players approaching their thirties.

Mac Allister will turn 29 during the final year of his current agreement, and the club may want to carefully assess the length and financial terms of any proposed extension.

However, his recent performances could make it increasingly difficult for Liverpool to justify delaying discussions for too long.

The midfielder’s ability to dictate the tempo, progress the ball and deliver in important moments makes him a valuable asset to the team.

There is also the question of transfer speculation. Continued uncertainty over his future could encourage further interest from major European clubs, including Real Madrid, who have previously been linked with the Argentine.

Liverpool Must Make the Right Decision

Although Liverpool are reportedly comfortable waiting before opening negotiations, Mac Allister’s resurgence could force the club to reconsider its strategy in the coming months.

As the contract moves closer to its final 18 months, the balance of power could gradually shift towards the player, particularly if he continues attracting interest from elsewhere.

For Liverpool, the priority should be finding an agreement that recognises his importance without compromising the club’s long-term financial planning.

Mac Allister has already demonstrated his quality since arriving from Brighton in 2023, and his recent displays suggest he remains capable of playing a central role in Liverpool’s ambitions.

If he maintains this form throughout the season, extending his contract could become a much more pressing issue for the Anfield hierarchy.

For now, Liverpool appear prepared to wait. But with Mac Allister playing some of his best football in a Liverpool shirt, the club may eventually have to move faster to secure his long-term future
