Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the January transfer window.
The Frenchman has attracted attention because of his ability to operate both as a centre-back and a right-back. His versatility could make him an attractive option for Liverpool, particularly with injuries creating problems in their defensive department.
According to reports cited by Football Insider, Liverpool are monitoring Kalulu as a possible addition to their squad. However, a transfer is far from guaranteed, with Juventus having little obvious reason to let one of their regular performers leave midway through the season.
Why Liverpool Are Interested in Pierre Kalulu
Liverpool’s reported interest in Kalulu comes at a time when defensive depth has become an important issue for the club.
Jeremie Frimpong has reportedly suffered another injury, while Conor Bradley has also spent a significant period out of action. These setbacks could increase the need for a defender capable of providing reliable cover at right-back without sacrificing quality in central defence.
Kalulu fits that profile. His experience in both positions would give Liverpool greater flexibility when dealing with injuries, suspensions and a demanding fixture schedule.
Rather than focusing exclusively on an attack-minded full-back, Liverpool could benefit from signing a defender who offers additional defensive stability and can adapt to different tactical situations.
Didier Deschamps Has Praised the Juventus Defender
Kalulu’s performances have also earned recognition from France manager Didier Deschamps.
When discussing the defender following his first senior international call-up, Deschamps praised his form at Juventus and acknowledged the quality he had previously demonstrated at AC Milan.
That recognition highlights the progress Kalulu has made during his time in Italian football.
His pace, positional flexibility and experience in Serie A could make him a useful option for a Liverpool side seeking greater defensive reliability. His ability to play centrally as well as on the right would also give the manager more choices when selecting the back four.
Juventus Could Make a January Deal Difficult
Despite Liverpool’s reported interest, convincing Juventus to sell may prove challenging.
Kalulu is under contract until 2029 and, according to the report, has featured in every match this season. His regular involvement suggests Juventus value his contribution, meaning the Italian club would have little incentive to accept a disappointing offer.
Liverpool could therefore face a difficult negotiation if they decide to turn their interest into a formal bid.
Manchester United are also reportedly keeping an eye on the defender, potentially creating additional competition should Juventus become willing to consider offers.
Could Kalulu Be the Right Signing for Liverpool?
From Liverpool’s perspective, Kalulu could represent a practical solution to their defensive concerns. His ability to cover two positions would provide valuable insurance if Frimpong or Bradley were unavailable again.
However, Liverpool would need to weigh the potential transfer cost against other defensive targets and their wider squad priorities.
For now, Kalulu should be viewed as a reported target rather than a confirmed January signing. Much will depend on Liverpool’s willingness to make an offer and Juventus’ position on selling a player who remains under contract for several more years.
If negotiations become possible at an acceptable price, the Juventus defender could emerge as an option worth considering as Liverpool prepare for the second half of the season.
