Liverpool could soon face a major decision over the future of captain Virgil van Dijk, with Turkish giants Galatasaray reportedly preparing an ambitious move for the experienced defender.
According to reports from Fotomac, Galatasaray have revived their long-standing interest in Van Dijk and are considering making an approach for the Liverpool captain.
The Turkish champions are looking to strengthen their defence after a difficult start to the season, with their defensive problems highlighted by a heavy 4-0 defeat to Trabzonspor earlier this month.
With the January transfer window approaching, Galatasaray are reportedly expected to make defensive reinforcements one of their priorities — and Van Dijk has emerged as a potential target.
Galatasaray ready to revive Van Dijk interest
Van Dijk has reportedly been on Galatasaray’s radar for around two years, and the Turkish club now appears ready to explore the possibility of finally bringing him to Istanbul.
The report claims Galatasaray could consider a move as early as January.
However, Liverpool are unlikely to welcome the idea of losing their captain midway through the season, particularly with the club already undergoing significant changes.
A January transfer could therefore prove difficult, with a move potentially more realistic next summer.
Van Dijk’s contract situation could also make the situation particularly interesting. With his current deal reportedly running until the end of the season, he could have the opportunity to negotiate with clubs outside England from January if the relevant conditions are met.
Liverpool previously confirmed Van Dijk’s contract extension in April 2025, keeping him at Anfield beyond the 2024/25 campaign.
Now, at 35, he remains one of the most experienced figures in Liverpool’s squad and continues to wear the captain’s armband under manager Andoni Iraola.
Liverpool have already lost several leaders
For Liverpool, the timing of Galatasaray’s interest could hardly be more complicated.
The Reds have already experienced significant changes to their squad, with Mohamed Salah leaving the club this summer after nine years at Anfield.
Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté have also departed, meaning Van Dijk’s experience and leadership have become even more valuable during this period of transition.
Liverpool have placed Alisson, Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai within the leadership group supporting Van Dijk, but the Dutchman remains the senior figure at the top.
That could make a January departure extremely difficult to justify.
Unless Van Dijk himself pushes for a move, Liverpool would have little reason to weaken their defensive and leadership structure in the middle of the campaign.
Could Van Dijk reunite with Salah in Turkey?
There is also an intriguing subplot to the story.
Salah completed his move away from Liverpool this summer and joined Trabzonspor in August. If Galatasaray were eventually able to convince Van Dijk to make the switch to Turkey, the former Liverpool teammates could once again find themselves playing in the same country.
For now, however, a move remains far from certain.
Van Dijk’s experience, leadership and influence could prove crucial as Iraola continues to reshape Liverpool’s squad.
The bigger question may come next summer.
If Galatasaray present Van Dijk with a lucrative contract and offer him a major leadership role, the defender could have a decision to make about whether to continue his Liverpool journey or begin a new chapter in Turkey.
