A day after the emotional Anfield farewell for Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, Liverpool FC confirmed the departure of another first-team player, following his earlier announcement on social media.
The player, Rhys Williams, who had previously spent time on loan at West Bromwich Albion, revealed that his time at Liverpool was coming to an end. In a heartfelt post on X, he reflected on his journey from joining the club as a nine-year-old to leaving as a 25-year-old, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Reds, share dressing rooms with club legends, and play in front of the supporters. He signed off with a message of appreciation to the club and fans, including “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Shortly after his post, Liverpool officially confirmed on their website that the defender would leave once his contract expires at the end of June. Williams progressed through the academy ranks, spending 16 years at the club from youth level to the senior team.
The club also issued a statement thanking him for his service and wishing him well for the future.
All of Williams’ 19 senior appearances for Liverpool came during the 2020/21 season. Since then, he has gone on multiple loan spells over four years, and his opportunities at Anfield became increasingly limited, with just one senior matchday squad involvement this season as an unused substitute.
Now 25, the Preston-born defender is seeking regular first-team football elsewhere after falling behind in the defensive pecking order at Anfield in recent seasons.
Although his Liverpool career did not fully develop beyond that breakthrough campaign, he played a crucial role during the 2020/21 injury crisis, helping the team secure Champions League qualification.
