Liverpool Set for Talks Over January Recall of Rising Defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe

Written by Eddie Being

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to meet with Ifeanyi Ndukwe’s representatives to discuss the possibility of bringing the young defender back to Anfield during the January transfer window.

The 18-year-old has been attracting attention with his performances for Spanish side Levante, where he is currently developing on loan after missing out on a UK work permit during the summer.

However, Ndukwe has since met the requirements to qualify for a work permit, potentially opening the door for an earlier return to Liverpool.

Ndukwe’s Representatives to Hold Talks With Liverpool

According to Sky Sport Austria transfer reporter Eric Niederseer, Ndukwe’s agents from More Than Sport by AS1 are expected to travel to the United Kingdom for discussions with Liverpool.

The meeting is reportedly set to focus on the possibility of a January return and the defender’s next career steps.

Ndukwe impressed during Liverpool’s pre-season preparations before joining Levante to gain valuable first-team experience. His progress in Spain has since increased interest in his development and raised questions about whether the Reds could bring him back sooner than initially planned.

While no final decision has been confirmed, the upcoming discussions could provide a clearer picture of Liverpool’s plans for the highly rated youngster.

Could Liverpool Bring Him Back in January?

A potential January recall would give Liverpool an opportunity to assess Ndukwe’s readiness for a greater role within the senior squad.

The defender has reportedly begun establishing himself at Levante, making regular appearances and gaining important experience in Spanish football. Continuing his development in LaLiga could therefore remain an attractive option for both the player and Liverpool.

At Anfield, however, competition for places remains strong. Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet are currently forming a centre-back partnership, meaning Ndukwe would face a challenge if he returned hoping to break into the first team immediately.

Nevertheless, injuries, changes in squad requirements or an opportunity to train regularly with Liverpool’s senior players could influence the club’s decision in January.

Liverpool Must Decide What Is Best for Ndukwe’s Development

Although the possibility of an early return is attracting attention, Liverpool will need to consider whether recalling Ndukwe would offer greater benefits than allowing him to continue playing regularly in Spain.

At just 18, consistent competitive football could be crucial to his long-term development. Remaining at Levante would allow him to gain further experience, improve his defensive understanding and build confidence before potentially competing for a first-team place at Anfield.

On the other hand, Liverpool may believe that bringing him back would help accelerate his progress if the right opportunities become available.

For now, the reported meeting with his representatives is an important development, but it does not confirm that a January recall will happen.

Liverpool supporters will be watching closely to see whether the club decides to bring the promising defender back to Merseyside or allow him to continue his development in Spain for the remainder of the season.

What do you think? Should Liverpool recall Ifeanyi Ndukwe in January or allow him to continue gaining experience at Levante? Share your thoughts in the comments.
