Liverpool Target David Otorbi as Valencia Raise Winger’s Release Clause to £50m

Written by Eddie Being

Liverpool have reportedly shown interest in signing Valencia winger David Otorbi, but the Spanish club have moved quickly to strengthen their position by increasing the teenager’s release clause.

According to reports from Spain, Liverpool were prepared to trigger Otorbi’s previous €30 million (£25.1 million) release clause. However, Valencia have activated a contract extension that reportedly increases the fee to €60 million (£50.2 million).

The development could complicate Liverpool’s pursuit of the highly rated youngster as they continue to assess their attacking options.

Who Is David Otorbi?

Otorbi is a 19-year-old right winger who has become an increasingly important member of Valencia’s first-team squad this season.

The Spanish youth international has featured in eight of Valencia’s nine matches so far, demonstrating the trust the club have placed in his development.

He also scored his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw against Racing Santander earlier this month, further increasing attention surrounding his progress.

His performances have reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, with Liverpool and Newcastle among the sides monitoring his situation.

Valencia Move Quickly to Protect Their Young Star

Reports from Spanish outlets AS and Plaza Deportiva indicate that Valencia have activated a clause extending Otorbi’s contract until 2031.

The agreement reportedly includes an improved salary and an increased release clause of €60 million, equivalent to approximately £50.2 million.

The move gives Valencia greater control over the winger’s future and places them in a stronger negotiating position should interest from the Premier League intensify.

It remains unclear whether Liverpool would be willing to meet the new valuation or attempt to negotiate a different agreement.

Liverpool Held Talks With Valencia

Liverpool representatives reportedly travelled to Valencia’s Ciudad Deportiva de Paterna training complex this week for discussions with sporting director Braulio Vázquez.

The meeting was primarily linked to Harvey Elliott’s loan spell at Valencia, with both clubs understood to be discussing what the midfielder needs to do to improve his prospects.

However, Otorbi’s future may also have featured in the discussions.

Liverpool’s regional scouting manager for Spain and Portugal, Kiko Espinar, was reportedly present. He has been involved in recruitment work connected with several players, including Stefan Bajčetić, Luis Díaz and Victor Muñoz.

His presence would be relevant if Liverpool are seriously considering a move for Otorbi, although the reported interest does not confirm that a formal transfer bid has been submitted.

Do Liverpool Need Another Winger?

Liverpool strengthened their wide attacking options during the summer with the arrivals of Victor Muñoz and Bradley Barcola.

They also have Cody Gakpo in their attacking plans, while teenage winger Rio Ngumoha continues to develop.

Despite those options, recruiting a natural right winger could still appeal to Liverpool as they look to maintain competition and depth across the forward line.

Yankuba Minteh of Brighton and Crystal Palace’s Ismaïla Sarr were reportedly among the players considered late in the previous transfer window.

Otorbi could therefore represent another option for Liverpool’s recruitment team, particularly if they believe his potential justifies the investment.

Will Liverpool Continue Their Interest?

Valencia’s decision to increase Otorbi’s release clause makes a potential transfer considerably more expensive than the original reported valuation.

Liverpool must now decide whether the young winger fits their recruitment plans and whether pursuing a deal would represent good value.

For now, the situation remains a developing transfer story. Liverpool’s reported interest should not be interpreted as confirmation that a deal is close, and it remains to be seen whether the Reds will make a formal move.
