Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has made a surprising suggestion that could get Liverpool fans talking, claiming Trent Alexander-Arnold should consider returning to Anfield if his situation at Real Madrid does not improve.
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool for Real Madrid after spending his entire senior career at the club, bringing an emotional end to his long association with the Reds.
However, according to Allardyce, the England international now faces an important decision if he continues to struggle for regular playing time in Madrid.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Allardyce suggested that the 27-year-old needs to be playing consistently at this stage of his career.
“If he is going to be a Real Madrid player then this season he needs to be playing more than ever — if not, he should come back to the Premier League. Liverpool could do with him back.”
The comments come amid uncertainty surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s role at Real Madrid, with the club’s options at right-back increasing and manager José Mourinho reportedly experimenting with the Englishman in midfield.
Allardyce also defended Alexander-Arnold against the criticism he has received for his defensive performances.
The former England manager believes the Liverpool academy graduate’s defensive weaknesses have often been exaggerated, while insisting that his ability on the ball remains a major asset.
His passing range, creativity and ability to produce chances from deep made him one of Liverpool’s most influential players during his time at Anfield.
And despite his controversial decision to leave the club, Allardyce believes Liverpool could still benefit from having him back.
The idea of Alexander-Arnold returning to Liverpool would undoubtedly divide supporters.
Some fans would welcome back a player who helped the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and other major honours.
Others, however, remain unhappy with the way his Liverpool chapter ended and believe the club should continue moving forward without him.
For now, there is no indication that Liverpool are actively trying to bring Alexander-Arnold back.
But if his situation at Real Madrid continues to deteriorate, the possibility of a sensational Premier League return could become one of the biggest talking points in football.
