Liverpool collapse from 2-0 up as Leeds turn Chicago friendly on its head – and Curtis Jones is in the firing line

Liverpool looked in complete control for most of the first half of their final pre-season friendly against Leeds United at Soldier Field. Goals from Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz gave Andoni Iraola’s side a deserved 2-0 half-time lead, and a comfortable victory appeared inevitable.
Instead, the second half turned into a full-scale meltdown.
Leeds scored four unanswered goals after the break. Brenden Aaronson pulled one back on the hour, Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised, Sean Longstaff put the Whites ahead, and Calvert-Lewin added a fourth late on. Final score: Liverpool 2-4 Leeds.
The third Leeds goal, scored by Longstaff in the 73rd minute, has drawn particular anger from Reds fans. Curtis Jones, who had come on at half-time, was heavily criticised for lazy defending – failing to track the run properly and unable to prevent the finish.
Here are some of the reactions flooding X:
Paulo: “You can tell Curtis Jones is so signed out, his head’s not here anymore.”
Artv: “Tale of two halves without a doubt. Curtis Jones so poor again.”
LiverZonan: “Curtis Jones just doesn’t give a toss, does he.”
Dj20: “Curtis Jones’ head is not in it! His mind is in Italy. Been awful since he came on.”
Slotto97: “Looks like Curtis Jones can’t be arsed to play. Pulled out of that tackle, probably not wanting to get injured before a move.”
A chastening end to the USA tour for Liverpool, and another difficult night for Jones in the eyes of many supporters.
