Odds cut dramatically on surprise contender for Liverpool job after Arne Slot dismissal
A shock candidate has emerged in the race to become Liverpool’s next manager following the departure of Arne Slot, despite never having managed in the Premier League.
Slot was dismissed on May 30 after Liverpool finished fifth in the league, ending a difficult campaign. Although he won the title in his debut season, criticism grew over his style of play, with Mohamed Salah publicly calling for a return to Liverpool’s famous high-intensity, attacking football.
The Dutch coach leaves Anfield with 66 wins from 113 matches and joins only Jürgen Klopp as a manager to have delivered a Premier League title for the club.
Former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola remains the overwhelming favourite to take charge after leading the Cherries to a historic sixth-place finish and Europa League qualification. Liverpool have also been linked with Sebastian Hoeneß, Oliver Glasner and Pierre Sage.
However, betting markets have seen a major shift, with former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders now emerging as the second-favourite candidate. Lijnders, who played a significant role under Klopp during Liverpool’s Champions League and Premier League-winning years, is reportedly priced at 9/1.
The Dutch coach has previously managed NEC and Red Bull Salzburg before joining Pep Guardiola’s staff at Manchester City for the 2025/26 season.
