With the January transfer window fast approaching, Liverpool have been linked with several potential moves — including the possible recall of one of their loanees who has struggled away from Anfield.
The club is reportedly considering bringing Harvey Elliott back from Aston Villa after a disappointing start to his loan spell there.
Elliott, who joined Villa on an initial loan deal that includes an obligation to buy for £35 million, has

found it difficult to impress under Unai Emery. So far, the 22-year-old has made just two starts in seven appearances and hasn’t featured in any of Villa’s matches over the past month.
Former Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness recently commented on the situation, expressing surprise that Elliott hasn’t had more opportunities to showcase his talent. Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested that Liverpool might be monitoring the situation closely and could consider recalling the young midfielder before the permanent deal is triggered.
Wyness hinted at a growing theory among fans — that if Elliott reaches 10 appearances for Villa, the obligation-to-buy clause would automatically come into effect.
As a result, both clubs may be reassessing their positions, particularly as Liverpool could use more midfield options with some of their recent signings yet to fully settle. Wyness added that many Liverpool supporters would prefer to see Elliott back in the team, especially considering his familiarity with the squad and his creative spark on the field.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are also working behind the scenes to secure the futures of two key midfielders who have become integral under Arne Slot — Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch. Both players joined the club in 2023 and have quickly established themselves as vital components of Slot’s system. According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are currently progressing in contract talks with Szoboszlai, though discussions have not yet reached the final stage.
The club is reportedly ready to offer the Hungarian international an improved deal that better reflects his growing influence and consistent performances.
With these developments, it’s clear that Liverpool’s management is focused not only on immediate results but also on shaping the squad for long-term success. As the City clash approaches, Slot’s side will look to translate their recent form into another statement victory, while the club’s transfer and contract decisions continue to unfold behind the scenes
