Florian Wirtz is now a major doubt for Liverpool’s Champions League meeting with PSV on Wednesday. The midfielder missed the loss to Nottingham Forest with a muscle problem, and despite initial optimism from Arne Slot, his situation looks worse after he was absent from Tuesday’s training session at Kirkby, according to Liverpool World.
Wirtz’s absence leaves Liverpool facing a significant setback ahead of a game they badly need to win to restore momentum. While he sat out, several academy players joined first-team training, including James Norris, who has just returned from a loan spell with Shelbourne following the end of the League of Ireland season.
It’s an untimely blow for Wirtz, who delivered his strongest performance yet for the club in the previous Champions League outing against Real Madrid. Slot is expected to give a further update later today, but the German may not return until at least next weekend’s match against West Ham.
Norris trained with the squad but cannot be used in the Champions League as he isn’t registered and is too old for List B. The 22-year-old has made only two senior appearances for Liverpool, the last nearly four years ago, and looks likely to leave again in January after a steady run of games in Ireland.
