Liverpool news

Liverpool’s 32-month search for clarity may soon be over as the Man City ruling approaches.

A long and frustrating wait for answers in English football may finally be coming to an end — and no club has a greater stake in the outcome than Liverpool.

Miguel Delaney of The Independent reports that a verdict on Manchester City’s 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules is now expected “this month.” Such a decision would conclude a saga that has stretched on for nearly three years and cast a shadow over multiple title races. Pep Guardiola previously suggested clarity would arrive in February or March 2025, a deadline that has long passed.

According to the report, the recent resolution of the Associated Party Transaction (APT) case may have opened the door for the main investigation to wrap up, with leading Premier League officials said to be “bracing themselves” for the long-awaited ruling.

115 charges and nearly three years of waiting

For Liverpool, this is about far more than administrative wrangling. It’s tied directly to the sense of fairness surrounding two of the closest title battles in Premier League history.

Liverpool finished a single point behind City in both the 2018/19 and 2021/22 seasons — agonisingly narrow margins given the allegations that later emerged.

Earlier this year, Jürgen Klopp even joked that he’d “buy the beer” if Liverpool were ever handed additional league titles as a result of the case, saying supporters could “have a parade in my garden” should justice prevail.

His comments underline just how seriously Liverpool fans view the outcome, even if no one realistically anticipates retrospective championships.

The Premier League prepares for “the big one”

Delaney’s reporting stresses that while the APT settlement has helped clarify certain financial regulations, the 115 charges form “a completely separate judicial process” — one that could still have major implications for the competitive balance of the league.

Manchester City continue to deny any wrongdoing.

But after waiting since February 2023, it now appears the process is approaching its conclusion, with Premier League legal teams reportedly “locked away” as they finalise their work.

Whatever the eventual verdict, Liverpool supporters understand that this case is about more than one club’s alleged actions — it’s about restoring trust in the integrity of the league that means so much to them.
