The Huge Fee Liverpool Must Pay If They Axe Arne Slot Following the PSV Loss

Written by admin

Liverpool may reportedly face a huge compensation bill if they choose to dismiss Arne Slot following their damaging 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven.

The Premier League champions suffered yet another nightmare performance on Wednesday, marking their second consecutive humiliating loss in front of the Anfield crowd.

After being beaten 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at the weekend, Liverpool were dismantled by PSV in a display that again highlighted their defensive frailties and deepened their alarming slump.

Slot’s team have now lost nine of their last 12 matches across all competitions and have been defeated by three or more goals in three successive games — a run that has placed the Dutch manager under intense scrutiny.

Unless Slot decides to resign from his position, Liverpool would be required to pay a major compensation fee to terminate his contract early.

Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2024, signed a three-year contract that runs until June 2027. Dutch media reports claim he earns £6.6 million per year excluding bonuses, meaning Liverpool could be forced to pay more than £10 million if they choose to dismiss him anytime soon.

When asked if he was worried about his position after the PSV defeat, Slot replied:

“I’m not concerned. My attention isn’t on my own job security. I focus on analysing and helping the players as much as possible, although clearly I’m not doing it as effectively as last season.”

Liverpool haven’t endured a slump like this in nearly 70 years. This is the first time they have suffered nine defeats in 12 matches since the 1953-54 campaign, and the last time they lost three straight games by three or more goals was also back in December 1953.

The Reds have now dropped to 12th in the Premier League, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, and sit 13th in their Champions League group after five games.

Their performances at both ends of the pitch have collapsed, with centre-backs Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk once again heavily criticised for their display on Wednesday.

After the match, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard weighed in on their form, insisting it is too soon to label the situation a “crisis.”

Instead, the former Rangers manager described the run as a “rut,” arguing it would be unfair to the squad and coaching staff to call it anything more severe at this stage
