Jamie Carragher has been put on blast by a former Premier League manager following his damning comments about Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday as Florian Wirtz’s deflected strike rescued his side a point.
Wirtz thought he had opened his account for Liverpool until his strike went down as an Nordi Mukiele own-goal as he was told during his post-match interview.
Liverpool’s point against Sunderland comes after they beat West Ham United 2-0 on Sunday.
Arne Slot dropped Salah for their visit of the London Stadium and didn’t recall him to the starting XI versus Sunderland.
Before Liverpool’s trip to West Ham, Carragher brought up Jurgen Kiopp’s legendary spell at Anfield and hailed the importance of Salah, as well as Alisson and Virgil van Dijk.
But he bemoaned their decline and claimed the Egyptian star’s ‘legs have gone’.
The catalyst for Liverpool at the very start of the run in 2018 with Jurgen Klopp was Alisson, [Virgil] van Dijk, and Salah,” he said, before the West Ham win.
“Alisson’s injured a lot now, he doesn’t play so much. But you watch Van Dijk now, not the same player, and Mo Salah looks like his legs have gone.”
But Carragher’s stinging assessment of Salah has not gone down well with Sam Allardyce, who has slammed the Liverpool legend.
Allardyce called Carragher’s statement ‘absolutely pathetic’ as he accused him of chasing ‘popularity’.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, the former Newcastle United and Bolton managed said: “Stop it. He should know better.
“He should really know better. That’s an absolutely pathetic statement, but he’s good at them, isn’t he?
“He’s good at just throwing it out there for a bit of, you know, ‘popularity’. To keep himself on the front end of it. That’s a disgrace. His legs haven’t gone.”
Allardyce added: “How can his legs go from what he did last year, having the summer off, and then his legs go this year? How can that happen? It doesn’t happen overnight.
“How does he know anyway? He doesn’t train with him, he doesn’t watch him train. He sees him play, and he might not be doing so well, but that’s like many of the Liverpool players.”
Salah has scored just five goals across all competitions this season.
He has found it tough this campaign amid Liverpool’s struggles.
