Jürgen Klopp has admitted he would be more likely to take charge of Atlético Madrid than city rivals Real Madrid, while also revealing that he is not “completely finished” with coaching.

The former Liverpool FC boss made the remark amid growing speculation about his future, though it remains unclear whether a return to Anfield would ever be considered. Even if the possibility existed, one could imagine figures like Michael Edwards and the club’s hierarchy preferring to look toward a new managerial direction rather than revisiting the past.
Klopp’s soft spot for the underdog
Klopp has often shown a tendency to choose projects where he can build something rather than step into the most dominant team in a league. In comments shared by Fabrizio Romano on X, the German suggested he would favour Atlético over Real if he ever returned to club management, highlighting his long-standing appreciation for underdog stories.
For now, however, the 58-year-old insists no concrete opportunity has arrived, leaving his next move uncertain.
Liverpool may still look for a fresh start
Those comments could raise eyebrows at Anfield, especially with mixed results under current manager Arne Slot. Still, bringing Klopp back would appear unlikely.
Liverpool’s situation today is very different from when Klopp first arrived in 2015. Back then, the club were fighting to re-establish themselves among the elite, whereas now the expectation is to compete at the very top with the resources available.
Because of that, the priority may not be to steady the ship with a familiar figure, but to find a coach capable of getting the maximum from a strong squad — something that could push the club toward appointing a new face rather than turning back to a legendary one. ⚽🔥
