Ibrahima Konaté may have unintentionally dropped a hint about the possibility of signing a new contract with Liverpool F.C..

The French defender spoke positively about Liverpool’s ability to bounce back despite a tough 2025/26 season, with the club currently struggling outside the Premier League’s top four and sitting 21 points behind leaders Arsenal.
In remarks shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Fabrizio Romano, the former RB Leipzig centre-back stressed that Liverpool are still fully focused on winning trophies. He also told ESPN that supporters will eventually forget this disappointing campaign once the club returns to winning the Premier League and Champions League.
Those comments feel a bit unusual if he were truly planning to run down his contract, which expires this summer, and leave. At the moment, there’s still no concrete confirmation that Konaté intends to end his Anfield career.
According to David Ornstein via The Athletic in March, discussions between both sides have been “constructive,” with player and club open to reaching an agreement.
Liverpool would certainly benefit from keeping him, especially with uncertainty around defensive depth and fitness concerns for players like Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet. When fully fit, Konaté remains one of Europe’s top centre-backs, making a contract extension an important priority for the club.
For now, there’s no real urgency to see him leave Anfield anytime soon
