Liverpool have been encouraged to bring back former academy product Harry Wilson on a free transfer this summer, four years after Jurgen Klopp sanctioned his permanent departure to Fulham.
Wilson, who spent nearly two decades associated with the club from 2005 to 2022, made just two first-team appearances for the Reds. His development was shaped by multiple loan spells, with the most significant coming at Fulham during the 2021-22 season. Impressed by his contributions, the Cottagers secured him on a permanent basis.
Now 29, the Wales international has enjoyed a standout 2025-26 Premier League campaign, registering 10 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances. With his contract at Craven Cottage set to expire at the end of the month, Wilson is poised to become one of the most sought-after free agents in the market.
As Liverpool prepare for life without Mohamed Salah, the search for a right-sided forward has intensified. While Wilson’s profile differs from the Egyptian star’s explosive style, former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister believes the winger could offer significant value as a squad addition.
“He’s a really interesting one,” McAllister told Grosvenor Casino. “He’s been coached in the Liverpool way, and he always caught the eye when you were around Anfield.
“When I was doing bits and bobs for the club, you’d hear about the young players coming through, and he was one of the standouts. I watched Harry from a very young age, and the performances you’ve seen at Fulham are very similar to what I saw when he was playing for the youth team at Liverpool. With his passing range, his ability to get a goal, and his work rate, he’s becoming a very complete player.”
McAllister continued: “So, it’s no surprise there’s interest, as he’s up at the end of the season, and I’m sure there will be a lot of takers. Liverpool should be one of them. Without a shadow of a doubt, Harry is a top-end Premier League player now. He has been on the international stage for his country as well, and he’s been fantastic there. I’m really pleased for him because he’s a very hard worker.”
Despite the endorsement, there are currently no indications that Liverpool are actively pursuing a return for Wilson. The club appears focused on other targets, while the 29-year-old has been strongly linked with moves to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
Tottenham, in particular, are in the midst of a squad overhaul following a difficult campaign that brought them close to relegation danger. Spurs have already agreed deals for Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi and have submitted a bid for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, who has also been connected with Liverpool.
Bringing Wilson back on a free transfer would represent a low-risk opportunity for Liverpool to add a proven Premier League performer familiar with their philosophy. Whether the club chooses to act on McAllister’s recommendation remains to be seen, but the winger’s development into a complete, goal-contributing wide player has clearly caught the attention of several top-flight sides.
