Liverpool supporters have been left debating Dominik Szoboszlai’s role in the team following the Reds’ disappointing 3-2 Champions League defeat against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.
Despite taking the lead twice through Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak, Liverpool were unable to secure a positive result, conceding three goals from set-pieces in a frustrating evening for Andoni Iraola’s side.
The defeat marked Liverpool’s first Champions League loss of the season and came just days after their Premier League setback against Arsenal, increasing the pressure on the team to respond.
Szoboszlai’s performance sparks debate
Szoboszlai started the match in the number 10 position, operating alongside Alexis Mac Allister and young midfielder Trey Nyoni.
The Hungarian international completed the full 90 minutes before being moved to right-back during the closing stages as Liverpool searched for a way back into the contest.
However, his performance attracted criticism from sections of the Liverpool fanbase, with some supporters questioning whether he is best suited to playing in an advanced midfield role.
One supporter suggested that Szoboszlai’s future at Liverpool could involve playing at right-back, arguing that his qualities might be better utilised in that position.
Another fan compared his situation to players such as Federico Valverde and Marcos Llorente, suggesting that a move towards a full-back role could be worth considering.
Others were less impressed with his contribution in midfield, pointing to his struggles to create opportunities, progress the ball and influence the attacking play.
Liverpool supporters defend the midfielder
Despite the criticism, not every Liverpool supporter believes Szoboszlai deserves to be singled out following the defeat.
Several fans have defended the 25-year-old, reminding critics that he has only recently returned from injury and should be given time to regain his best form.
One supporter questioned why fans were so quick to turn against a player who had delivered important performances for Liverpool in the past.
Another argued that the defeat was a collective failure rather than the responsibility of one individual.
There were also calls for supporters to remain behind the team during a difficult period, with fans insisting that criticism should not turn into a lack of support for players wearing the Liverpool shirt.
What happens next for Szoboszlai?
The debate surrounding Szoboszlai’s best position is likely to continue as Liverpool look to recover from consecutive defeats.
His versatility remains an important quality, but the Hungarian will need to produce more convincing performances if he is to silence growing questions about his role in Iraola’s midfield.
For now, Liverpool’s priority will be putting the disappointing result behind them, improving their defensive organisation and finding the consistency needed to get their season back on track.
Whether Szoboszlai remains in the number 10 position, returns to a deeper midfield role or is occasionally used at right-back remains to be seen.
