UEFA has confirmed Italian referee Davide Massa will take charge of Wednesday’s Champions League clash between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid at Anfield.
The 45-year-old is one of Italy’s most experienced officials and will oversee the 11th European meeting between the two clubs. He has previously refereed Atlético three times in continental competition and has taken charge of one Liverpool match.
The fixture comes almost exactly a year after the sides last met at Anfield, when Liverpool edged a dramatic 3-2 victory thanks to a late winner. That night was also marked by an ugly incident involving a home supporter and Atlético manager Diego Simeone.
Massa has already officiated four matches this season. While highly regarded in Italy, he was not selected for FIFA’s refereeing team for the upcoming World Cup.
Liverpool host Atlético on Wednesday night in what promises to be a high-intensity Champions League encounter.
