Jurgen Klopp Opens Up on Diogo Jota’s Death and the Instinct That Brought Him to Liverpool

Written by Eddie Being

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is still struggling to come to terms with the death of Diogo Jota, as he reflects on the instinct that convinced him to sign the Portuguese forward in 2020.

Klopp’s emotional comments feature in the new biography Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts, which celebrates the life, career and lasting legacy of the former Liverpool attacker.

Klopp’s Instinct Told Him to Sign Jota

When Liverpool signed Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020, the Reds already had an established attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino.

Despite the strength of Liverpool’s forward line, Klopp believed Jota possessed the qualities needed to make a significant impact at Anfield.

The German coach recalled watching a Wolves match and being impressed by Jota’s movement, physical strength, technical ability and attacking power.

Klopp explained that his initial interest came from a strong instinct rather than the club’s usual transfer recruitment process.

He asked Liverpool’s scouting team to gather more information about the forward because he wanted to examine his qualities more closely.

Versatility was another major factor behind the decision. Jota could operate in several attacking positions, while his mentality and willingness to work made him a strong fit for Liverpool’s demanding style of football.

Jota Proved Klopp Right at Anfield

Jota quickly established himself as an important member of Liverpool’s squad, providing goals, intelligent movement and competition for places across the front line.

His ability to find space in crowded penalty areas and finish chances with composure made him a valuable option for the Reds.

Over time, the Portuguese international became an influential figure in Liverpool’s attack and played an important role in the club’s pursuit of major honours.

His Liverpool journey also included the Premier League title triumph in 2025, a memorable achievement that made his subsequent death even more heartbreaking for supporters.

Jota and his brother, André Silva, tragically died in a car crash in northern Spain in July 2025. Jota was just 28 years old and left behind his wife and three young children.

Klopp Admits He Is Still Struggling With the Loss

Although Klopp understands that death is part of life, he admitted that Jota’s passing affected him in a way he still finds difficult to explain.

The former Liverpool boss recalled being left speechless when he first heard the news of the accident.

Rather than immediately asking for details, Klopp said he stopped what he was doing and tried to process what had happened.

More than a year later, he acknowledged that he had still not fully come to terms with losing the player.

His participation in the biography was also emotionally challenging. Klopp initially agreed to speak about Jota because he wanted to remember him and reflect on their time together.

However, when the conversation began, he realised that discussing the tragedy remained extremely painful.

His honesty offers a glimpse into the personal relationships behind Liverpool’s success and demonstrates how deeply Jota was valued by those who worked with him.

A Legacy That Liverpool Will Never Forget

Jota’s importance to Liverpool extended beyond his goals and performances. His determination, versatility and professional attitude helped him earn the trust of Klopp and his teammates.

For supporters, he will be remembered for his clinical finishing, intelligent runs and ability to deliver in crucial moments.

The biography Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts, published by Reach Sport, aims to celebrate his life and footballing legacy. According to the article, proceeds also support the LFC Foundation and grassroots football initiatives established in his name.

Klopp’s reflections serve as a reminder that behind every footballer’s achievements is a person whose loss can leave a lasting impact on family, friends, teammates and supporters.

Jota may no longer be at Anfield, but his contribution to Liverpool and the memories he created will continue to live on.
