Liverpool’s defensive future is attracting plenty of attention after Jeremy Jacquet made an impressive start to life at Anfield. The young French centre-back has reportedly caught the eye of former Reds defender Glen Johnson, who believes the defender has the potential to become one of the Premier League’s best.
Jacquet arrived from Rennes in the summer for a reported £60 million fee and has quickly established himself as an important figure in Liverpool’s defence under Andoni Iraola. His performances alongside captain Virgil van Dijk have offered encouragement as the Reds continue to build for the future.
Glen Johnson Impressed by Jeremy Jacquet’s Quality
Johnson, who made around 200 appearances for Liverpool between 2009 and 2015, has been particularly impressed by Jacquet’s composure, physical strength and ability on the ball.
Speaking to Betarades, the former England international explained that he had not watched Jacquet closely before his arrival in the Premier League. However, seeing the youngster perform at the highest level quickly changed his opinion.
Johnson praised the defender’s pace, strength, athleticism and calmness in possession, suggesting that his potential could be enormous if he continues to develop.
The comments underline the growing excitement surrounding Jacquet, whose early performances have suggested that he can handle the demands of English football despite his age.
At just 21, the Frenchman still has plenty of room to improve. If he continues progressing at his current rate, he could become a central figure in Liverpool’s defence for years to come.
Why Liverpool Should Keep Jacquet and Van Dijk Together
While Jacquet’s emergence has generated excitement, Johnson made it clear that the youngster should not be viewed simply as a replacement for Van Dijk.
The Liverpool captain remains an influential presence at the heart of the defence, combining leadership and experience with his ability to organise the back line.
Jacquet, meanwhile, offers youthful energy, athleticism and the potential to become a long-term defensive leader.
Keeping both players together could provide Liverpool with an effective balance between experience and youth. Van Dijk’s knowledge of the game could also help Jacquet continue developing as he adjusts to the demands of Premier League football.
Their partnership could therefore become one of the most important foundations of Liverpool’s long-term defensive plans.
Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool Future Remains a Talking Point
Attention has also turned to Van Dijk’s contract situation, with the Dutch defender’s reported deal set to expire next summer.
Johnson believes Liverpool could attempt to retain the experienced centre-back for another season, provided he remains fit and continues performing at a high level.
However, the former Reds defender also acknowledged that Van Dijk will have an important say in deciding the next stage of his career.
At 35, the Liverpool captain must consider his ambitions, physical condition and desire to continue competing at the highest level.
For Liverpool, retaining Van Dijk would offer continuity and valuable experience while Jacquet continues to develop. Losing such an influential defender, on the other hand, would leave the club with a significant leadership role to fill.
What Jacquet’s Rise Means for Liverpool
Jacquet’s early progress gives Liverpool another reason to feel optimistic about the future of their defence.
His physical qualities, composure and ability to contribute in possession could make him an important part of the team’s plans. Playing alongside an experienced defender such as Van Dijk would also give him an opportunity to learn from one of the Premier League’s most established centre-backs.
However, maintaining consistency throughout a full season will be the real test. Liverpool will need Jacquet to continue performing against different attacking styles while remaining focused on his development.
For now, the combination of Jacquet’s potential and Van Dijk’s experience offers Liverpool an encouraging defensive prospect.
If both players remain available and continue building their understanding, their partnership could prove valuable as Liverpool pursue their ambitions in the Premier League.
Liverpool fans will be watching two important developments closely: Jacquet’s continued progress at Anfield and the club’s decision over Van Dijk’s future.
