Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott ahead of the January transfer window. However, with Chelsea also interested in the England international, the Reds may need to consider alternative targets if the asking price proves too expensive.
According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea are seriously focused on signing Scott, with a potential January move under consideration. Liverpool are also monitoring the midfielder as they assess their options ahead of the winter transfer window.
Despite Scott’s growing reputation, Liverpool may have to decide whether spending a huge amount on the Bournemouth star is the right move for the squad.
Liverpool Could Face a £100 Million Decision
Scott has established himself as an important player for Bournemouth, making a January departure potentially difficult to negotiate.
Reports suggest that Bournemouth could demand between £90 million and £100 million for the midfielder during the middle of the season. With his current contract reportedly running until 2028, the Cherries could look to secure a significant transfer fee if interest intensifies.
Liverpool may therefore prefer to wait until the summer of 2027, when negotiations could become more favourable. However, any decision will depend on the club’s immediate midfield requirements and the availability of other targets.
Chelsea’s reported interest could also increase competition for Scott’s signature.
Why Lamine Camara Could Be a Better Fit for Liverpool
While Scott offers energy, mobility and the ability to contribute in different areas of midfield, Monaco’s Lamine Camara could provide a different profile that Liverpool need.
The Senegal international is viewed as a potential solution to the Reds’ need for a dedicated defensive midfielder who can protect the back four, win challenges and maintain balance when the team attacks.
Camara’s reported duel success rate of 68.4 per 90 minutes, placing him in the 97th percentile according to FotMob data cited in the original report, highlights his strength in physical contests.
His ability to compete for possession and provide defensive protection could make him an attractive option for Liverpool’s recruitment team.
A Defensive Midfielder Could Help Unlock Florian Wirtz
Liverpool need a midfield structure that allows their creative players to operate with greater freedom while maintaining defensive security.
Florian Wirtz is at his most dangerous when he has the opportunity to influence attacking situations and create chances in the final third. A specialist holding midfielder could help provide the protection needed to make that possible.
Camara’s profile suggests he could offer this balance, although his suitability would ultimately depend on Liverpool’s tactical plans and how quickly he could adapt to the Premier League.
Scott should not be dismissed, as his versatility and work rate could also benefit the Reds. However, if Liverpool’s priority is to strengthen their defensive midfield, recruiting a player whose natural game focuses on protecting the defence may make more sense.
Liverpool Must Choose Their January Target Carefully
Liverpool’s reported interest in Alex Scott demonstrates that the club are continuing to assess potential midfield reinforcements. Nevertheless, a transfer fee approaching £100 million would represent a major investment, particularly if the player does not directly address the team’s most pressing weakness.
Camara could offer a more cost-effective alternative, although his actual transfer price and Monaco’s willingness to negotiate would need to be established.
Ultimately, Liverpool must decide whether to pursue Scott’s all-round qualities or prioritise a specialist defensive midfielder who can improve the team’s balance.
For now, neither move should be treated as confirmed. The coming weeks may provide a clearer picture of Liverpool’s transfer plans as the January window approaches.
