Florian Wirtz has shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s controversial penalty appeal during their 1-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds were left frustrated after referee did not award a penalty when Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber appeared to pull Alexander Isak’s shirt inside the penalty area. Despite Liverpool’s protests, VAR decided not to intervene.
The incident quickly became a major talking point among Liverpool supporters, with many believing the officials should have awarded a spot-kick.
However, Wirtz has chosen not to dwell on the controversial decision, admitting that he has not watched the incident again.
Speaking after the game, the German midfielder said:
“I’ve not seen the actions on video, so can’t say much about it. Probably in some games you would have had these ones as penalties.
“But it’s not like this and we cannot change it so we don’t need to speak about it.”
Wirtz Focused on Liverpool Getting Back to Winning Ways
The 23-year-old also addressed Liverpool’s disappointing defeat, making it clear that team success matters more to him than individual performances or personal statistics.
Wirtz admitted that Liverpool created opportunities but failed to make the most of them against Mikel Arteta’s side.
The midfielder also came close to scoring, hitting the crossbar with a free-kick during the encounter.
He said:
“To be honest I don’t care about this so much. I just want us to win.
“I always want to play my best game but in the end the most important thing is that we win games.”
He added that Liverpool were unlucky with some of their attempts but insisted the team must remain positive and continue working hard.
Liverpool Must Respond After Arsenal Defeat
Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal was another frustrating result for Arne Slot’s side, with Kai Havertz scoring the only goal of the match in the 16th minute.
Despite the disappointment, Wirtz believes the team must keep believing in themselves and work towards improving their performances.
Liverpool will now need to put the defeat behind them and focus on their upcoming fixtures as they look to get their Premier League campaign back on track.
