Liverpool fans will have to wait a little longer to see young defender Giovanni Leoni return to first-team training after another setback in his recovery.
Head coach Andoni Iraola has confirmed that the 19-year-old’s recovery is taking longer than expected, revealing that his devastating knee injury was “more than just an ACL.” 😳
Leoni suffered serious ACL damage on his Liverpool debut against Southampton in September 2025, and he had been expected to rejoin the squad during the recent international break.
However, Iraola has now admitted that the injury involved several other issues around the knee, making his rehabilitation more complicated than initially anticipated.
The latest update suggests Leoni could begin training with the group during the next international break, provided his recovery continues to progress as hoped.
Liverpool signed the talented Italian defender from Parma for £26 million last summer, and supporters will be desperate to see him finally get his career at Anfield underway after such a cruel start.
At just 19, Leoni still has plenty of time to fulfil his potential. The priority now is ensuring he returns fully fit rather than rushing him back and risking another setback. 🙏❤️
Meanwhile, Liverpool could also be without Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai for Saturday’s clash against Brentford as injury concerns continue to trouble the squad.
Liverpool fans, would you rather see Leoni take more time to recover properly, or are you worried about how long his comeback is taking? 👇
