Arsenal open talks for Jarell Quansah as defensive options expand
Arsenal have opened discussions with Bayer Leverkusen over a move for England international Jarell Quansah, according to Sky Sports.
The 23-year-old centre-back, who left Liverpool for Leverkusen last summer, is back on the Premier League radar after a strong first season in the Bundesliga. Once viewed as a high-potential prospect at Anfield, Quansah never fully cemented a regular starting role. The switch to Germany gave him consistent minutes, and his performances earned him a place in England’s World Cup squad this summer.
Arsenal’s interest comes as the club continues to explore central defensive reinforcements. Fabrizio Romano reported earlier that Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa remains on their list, though any deal would be complicated. Liverpool, meanwhile, have decided against activating their buy-back clause on Quansah. talkSPORT reported that the club did not view a return as a priority, with the reported £70m figure seen as steep. That stance comes despite a thin defensive picture at Anfield: Ibrahima Konaté departed on a free transfer earlier this summer, Virgil van Dijk is now deep into his thirties, Ronald Araújo arrived on loan but carries a significant injury history, and Jeremy Jacquet has also struggled with fitness issues.
A move for Quansah would therefore represent a reunion with the Premier League for a player who left Liverpool only a year ago. Details remain sparse for now — how advanced the talks are, the potential fee, and whether Liverpool retain a sell-on clause that would still allow them to profit have not been confirmed.
