Liverpool have opened official club-to-club talks with PSG for Bradley Barcola — but the gap in valuation remains huge.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the Reds have submitted an opening bid worth more than €100m (£85.6m). French sources indicate Paris Saint-Germain are holding firm near £145m (€170m).
That leaves a significant distance to close. As Romano notes, Liverpool’s initial offer is “still far from PSG requests.” With only a few weeks left until the window shuts at the start of September, the clock is already loud.
The pickle Liverpool find themselves in
This is a deal the club has clearly prioritised for much of the window. Walking away now would feel like a major failure, especially when the remaining market options rarely match Barcola’s ceiling. At the same time, dragging negotiations out risks starving the rest of the squad of needed reinforcements.
Richard Hughes and the recruitment team cannot afford to play the long game at the expense of other targets. A drawn-out Barcola saga that leaves Andoni Iraola short elsewhere would be an unacceptable outcome.
The only realistic path is speed: either force the price into a more sensible range quickly, or pivot. Additional deals must already be lined up so that once the Barcola budget picture clarifies, Liverpool can move fast on the next pieces.
Why PSG might still move
There are reasons for cautious optimism. Luis Enrique already has Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and is linked with further attacking additions (including interest in Mika Godts). Expecting Barcola to fight for limited minutes while a Premier League club is prepared to make him a central figure looks optimistic on PSG’s part.
Liverpool’s hope is that the French champions ultimately accept a fee below their internal valuation. Barcola himself is understood to favour the move, and personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block.
Still, the anxiety is real. Every day spent locked in a high-stakes negotiation with PSG is a day the rest of the squad-building plan sits on hold. Liverpool need clarity soon — either a breakthrough on Barcola or a decisive walk-away so they can pivot elsewhere while time remains.
